Northwood 1st XI Cricket – 12 Run Win vs St Charles

St Charles won the toss and asked Northwood to bat first. Northwood batted very slowly and after 25 overs they had only reached 48 for 3 wickets . This brought Blayde Capell to the wicket and once again his positive batting helped Northwood reach a respectable 205/8 . Blayde Capell had a 60 run partnership with Andile Mokange (12) which put Northwood back on track. Blayde hit the ball to all corners on the field and fell 7 runs short of which would have been a well deserved century .

Northwood had St Charles 60/6 after brilliant opening bowling from Andile Mokange (2/22) and Slater Capell (2/30) . After tea C van Lingem came to the crease and took the game to Northwood with some power hitting, with 6 massive sixes and scoring 60 runs off 30 balls . All the lower order batsmen for St Charles chipped in and took St Charles to needing 12 runs off the last over. A Wright held his nerve and bowled Van Lingem with the first ball of the last over giving Northwood a tight 12 run win.

Northwood 1st XI Cricket Take the Win vs DHS

Northwood played DHS at DHS on Saturday 24 October. The game was delayed due to a damp pitch and play only started at 10H00.  The game was reduced to 35 overs. DHS won the toss and put Northwood into bat. The Northwood opening batsmen found the going tough during the first 10 overs . After 15 overs Northwood had struggled to 32/3 and at this stage DHS were well on top.

Blade Capell (59) then joined Junaid Syed (32) and between them helped Northwood into a good position with some positive batting. After they departed the rest of Northwood batting line up kept the scoreboard rolling. After 35 overs Northwood reached 181/7. With B de Meilon from DHS the pick of the bowlers taking 3/24.

After lunch DHS never got into their stride and could not get the scoreboard ticking over. Only B de Meilon (40) managed to keep Northwood bowlers at bay but the rest batted too slowly . DHS were eventually bowled out for 142 with the pick of Northwood bowlers P Abraham 2/15 and S Cairem 2/34. Northwood won by 39 runs.

Northwood Hockey Astro Upgrade

We are excited to hand over our Hockey Astro turf pitch to specialist contractors for the upgrade of the playing surface. It is hard to believe that it was 10 years ago since we were one of the first boys high schools in Durban to pioneer the establishment of our own international standard artificial hockey pitch on our own school campus. During these 10 years the top standard playing surface has made a major contribution to Northwood hockey being respected as one of the leading hockey playing schools in South Africa. Not only by the results achieved but also the way Northwood boys have learnt to play the game. The upgrade project is scheduled to be complete by January 2016 with the provision of a FIH approved water based Greenfields synthetic turf on a rubberized elastic layer. The same specification that was supplied to the FIH World Cup in Holland in 2014. Northwood hockey boys are privileged to have the world best facilities available to them at home at Northwood.
As this area is a construction site for the next 3 months please can we all, for our own health and safety , keep away from the site and the construction activities. Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to an exciting project.

The 2015 Sportsmen’s banquet is always the highlight of our sporting calendar as this event enables Northwood to honour our students who have participated and achieved in their various sporting codes.

Northwood Soccer Evenly Matched Vs Hilton

After an excellent game last week against Kearsney, much was expected from Northwood. After 5 minutes the expectations rose as Northwood calmly put the ball into the net through Goodwin Khuzwayo . After this the game was played in midfield and neither keeper was tested due to a lot of wayward passing. The 1st half ended with Northwood leading 1-0 which was a true reflection of the half. One expected the 2nd half to move up a gear but it was like the first half with aimless passing and both teams battling to get their game going. The match really looked like it was heading for a victory for Northwood with 5 minutes left, but Hilton did not give up as they put pressure on Northwood defence and forced a corner. This was Hilton’s last chance which they took with a great header from no.10 that left the Northwood keeper stranded. The game never rose to any great heights and in the end a 1-1 draw was a true reflection as Hilton had the better of the second half.

Dale Carnegie Course at Northwood

For the sixth consecutive year, the Dale Carnegie ‘Generation.Next’ course was attended by Grade 11 students from Northwood School, Northlands Girls High and Lady Fatima. This year Northwood hosted two courses and 60 students graduated with the internationally recognized and respected Dale Carnegie Certificate. The ‘Generation.Next’ programme comprises 8 weekly 3 hour sessions. On this world famous EQ course people skills, self-confidence, communication and leadership skills are honed, and public speaking abilities soar. As famous Dale Carnegie graduate, Warren Buffett says : ‘Leadership usually gravitates towards the person who can stand up and say what he means.’

Congratulations to Northwood Grade 11 Students Reece Loeve and Jean-Luc De Rosnay who were both the recipients of the Highest Award for Achievement.
