Northwood Surfing Report and Results 25/05/2013

The Durban beachfront buzzed for the final weekend of the Kzn Schools Surfing Final, which took place as part of a surfing & Jetski beach festival presented by the South African Maritime Safety Association and Durban Stars. It’s been a while since the Golden Mile witnessed a beach festival featuring surfing, jet-skiing, volleyball and touch rugby, and the event, along with the tremendously well-supported and iconic East Coast Radio Big Walk, brought back a carnival atmosphere too long missing from Durban’s revamped promenade.

Congratulations to our B team who have surfed really well and made it to the semi finals before being knocked out on Sunday, and to our A team who surfed their way into the finals. The standard of surfing was really high, which is very encouraging for the sport, it was the best school surfing has ever seen.

Competitors had their pick of clean 3 foot North Beach runners in perfect sunshine and clear water while professional judges scored from the tower and parents, coaches and members of the public cheered for their charges and stressed over wave-counts and heat-management, inter-school surfing finally had the stage it deserved.

The final was very close, but it was just not our day and we were placed 4th. Well done to the boys for making the final and thank you to the sponsors and supporters who came down to the beach.

Northwood 1st Hockey Team Claim Solid Victory Against Westville

The Northwood 1st hockey team claimed a solid 2 – 0 victory against a hard working Westville team on Friday night.

The match was played at a high tempo with Northwood creating most of the chances. Westville’s only chance of the first half came through a penalty corner which was run down by the Northwood first wave Dale van der Merwe. The teams went into the half time break deadlocked at 0 – 0.

The second half saw Northwood build on their momentum of the first half and they finally managed to break down the Westville defence when a brilliant pass from Tylo Remke found Matthew de Sousa in space who drew the goal keeper and played the ball to Matthew Robinson who made no mistake with a composed finish.

Westville created their second penalty corner of the game but the flick missed the target. Northwood extended their lead late in the half when Steve McManus scored from a penalty corner rebound. Northwood controlled the remainder of the half to clinch the victory.

Northwood qualified for the night league final last Wednesday when they had a convincing 4 – 1 win against Westville.

Tylo Remke was the hero of the day when he scored a hat-trick with the other goal coming from an unlucky Westville defender.

The result means that Northwood will have a chance to defend their title when they meet Kearsney in the final on the 12 June.
