Grade 11 Environmental Club Takes Part in International Coastal Clean Up

A dedicated group of grade 11 learners from Northwood’s Environmental Club, under the leadership of Dr Pillay, took to the shores of Umhlanga Beach. These enthusiastic environmentalists were engaged in removing litter in the early hours of this past Saturday morning, which coincided with the “International Coastal Clean Up”. Within an hour and over a distance of 20 metres , four bags of litter were collected, ranging from mussels being strangled by fishing gut to numerous cigarette stumps, ice cream sticks, socks and polystyrene cups, amongst others. The debris evidences human activities and more significantly the detrimental effect that it has on aquatic life and food security. With the cheering received from the morning joggers and photographers on the beach, we are hopeful that Northwood made a meaningful contribution to raising  awareness amongst the beach-goers and fishermen about keeping our environment clean.

Northwood 1st Team Soccer Take the Win vs Michaelhouse 2-0

Northwood put a stop to the Michaelhouse unbeaten run when they beat them 2-0 at Northwood on Saturday. Both sides played entertaining football and the game was one of the best played at Northwood.

Northwood took the lead early in the game with a great goal by the hard working Ross Venning-Pridham. Both sides played attacking football and the goalkeepers were kept busy .

Northwood deserved their lead at half time as they had more chances and were enterprising in mid field.

The second half was a ding dong battle, with Michaelhouse pushing for the equaliser and Northwood goalkeeper Taine Bird pulling off some great saves to keep the Knights in the lead.

Jordan Edy was a thorn in the Michaelhouse side with his devastating runs and he kept the Michaelhouse defence busy. With 8 minutes to play Jordan Edy went on another great run and fired a shot into the top left hand corner of the Michaelhouse goal to give the Knights a well deserved 2 goal lead.

For the last 8 minutes Northwood defended with style and hard working  captain Matthew Talbot marshalled his defence to keep Michaelhouse at bay and the Knights coming away with a well deserved victory.

3 Trophies for Northwood 7’s Rugby at Glenwood 7’s Tournament

Northwood 7’s rugby, Saturday 19 August. Venue – Glenwood

The Glenwood 7’s Tournament saw our u14 team in a tough pool full of u15 teams including the heavy weights like DHS and Westville u15A sides.

Unfortunately the boys only managed a single victory vs Transkei from 4 games in their pool.

The u15A side played brilliantly and were the highlight of the weekend winning the final 26-21 vs the home team Glenwood. Strong wins throughout all their pool games led to a brilliant finish.

The 2nd side did well to finish strong and take home the the bowl after a well worked victory over Ladysmith in the final.

The first side played well in the semis but lost out the the eventual winners of the tournament DHS 29-26 in what was one of the most entertaining fight backs of the tournament. Fortunately they played in the plate final vs Glenwood and managed an amazing 46-7 win!

Well done again to all the teams involved and getting 3 trophies in one weekend. Especially the u15 stamping their mark as the best side in their age group over the weekend.

Northwood 1st Team Soccer Win 1- 0 vs DHS

Northwood played traditional rivals DHS on Saturday. Whenever these two sides play it is always won by the odd goal. Once again the defence from both sides dominated and there were very few shots on goal. Neither goalkeepers were really tested in the first half, the game being rather subdued with both sides trying to dominate. As the match proceeded everyone felt that the first side to score would win this fixture or it was going to end in a tame draw. With 2 minutes remaining  Ross Venning- Pridham had other ideas and managed to score the vital goal. Northwood had the better of the game and deserved the narrow win vs evenly matched opponents.

Northwood is KZN’s Top Surfing School for 4th Consecutive Year

KZN Schools Surfing Results Letter:

The 2017 KZN Schools Tag-team Surfing Championships went down at Dairy Beach in clean 2-3ft contestable surf. Our generous sponsor -O’Neill Clothing’s banners were gently flapping in the westerly that was trickling through, making for the perfect setting for a Final, between the best surfing schools in KZN. Up for Grabs was the annual bragging rights of being KZN’s top surfing school and the awesome floating trophy that comes with it. On top of that, R6000 product Hamper from O’Neill for each surfer in the winning team, FANTASTIC! The semi-final got underway with the schools from the repechage heat fighting for a place in the finals. With some fine surfing from Crawford North Coast and Westville 1, they comfortably placed themselves into the finals to join Northwood 1, Clifton and Northwood 2. The battle was on. Crawford North Coast opened up with a bang, with two solid rides from Anthony Pottow, putting them in the lead of the 45 minute heat. Clifton and Northwood responded also posting strong scores. Until Northwood 1st‘s third Surfer Jared Hook posted a huge scoring ride which boosted his team into first place. Clifton’s Karl Steen kept his team in the running; following close behind, as Crawford’s surfers struggled to find the right waves. Brayden Bergset however, sealed the deal for Northwood 1st’s posting the highest scores of the day. Northwood 2nd team showed their consistency and came through strong at the end placing a respectable third to join their first team on the podium. With Westville 1 having a tough heat and just not finding the waves to post the scores that were needed to take the day. It was a fantastic afternoon as parents, coaches and surfers enjoyed the fine display of surfing on offer from all the teams, what a great contest! At the end of the day it was Northwood Boys 1st team who would be taking home the title and bragging rights for their fourth year in a row as undefeated champions amongst the KZN schools!! Once again, a huge thank you goes out to all the parents and coaches who endlessly support the surfers and to O’Neill clothing for supporting KZN Schools surfing, where we stoke the fire for young surfers to keep charging hard. Last but not least, thank you to all you surfers who come down week after week to feel the stoke of just getting in the water and keeping healthy competition alive, this is for you. Till next week where we will be finishing off with the title of KZN Schools Individual Champion, have a great week and keep surfing.

Northwood 1st XV Take the Win vs Clifton

On Saturday the 27th of May Northwood school hosted Clifton.

The Knights kicked-off playing towards the school. Northwood managed a great start building up some solid phases with outside centre Mac Mudara scoring in the corner within the first 3 minutes.

With a few handling errors from both sides for the next 15 minutes the game was really in limbo as each team waited for another to take charge. It would be Northwood who again set up a nice try to take a 14-0 lead. With another well worked try by experienced winger Mvelo Mlangeni, Northwood were up 21-0. Clifton did well to bounce back with 2 quick tries and reduce the deficit to 21-12. The game was officially alive and the Knights were really feeding off the energy. Another 2 brilliant converted tries by the Knights saw the Northwood home side go into the half time break for a chat holding a confident 35-12 lead.

Looking to build on their 1st half performance the Knights were humbled by a determined Clifton outfit. Clifton fought hard to score 3 unanswered tries in the second half which saw Northwood being forced into lots of errors which they will be feeling determined to sort out for their upcoming fixture on reunion weekend when they host Michaelhouse.

Special mention to Mvelo Mlangeni for some great work out wide consistently getting the Knights on the front foot and fly-half Robin Weersma with a brilliant kicking display all round.

Final score in favour of Northwood 35-31.

Save the Date for Old Boys Day 2017

Northwood’s annual Old Boys Day will take place on 3rd of June this year, and forms part of the “Reunion Weekend” which includes the school and Old Boys golf day, a special Old Boys assembly and breakfast, as well as the traditional Reunion Dinner held the night before match day.   Northwood parents and staff will be hard at work selling boerewors and bacon rolls, burgers, breyani, sweets and chips, as well as refreshments; along with a beer garden which will add to the festivities of the day.  The community are welcome to support their local high school in what is set to be a full day of competitive fixtures vs Michaelhouse.
