The brilliant sunshine of Friday morning, 2 November was a good omen for the 2012 Etana daREDevil run following a week of incessant rain along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
More than 200 Speedo-clad men in “50 Shades of RED” gathered in very muddy conditions to create awareness of prostate and testicular cancer by running through peak-hour traffic around the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Durbanites echoed the “we don’t take ourselves seriously, but we do take our work seriously” attitude of Etanans, donning a variety of interesting outfits to add to the spectacle. From ancient axe-wielding Vikings to Darth Vader, burly firemen and honest Abe Lincoln, they took the “dare” of the daREDevils to heart.
Feedback was positive, with all competitors, ranging from Northwood learners to retirees, enjoying the weather, fresh sea breeze and the Etana gees that prevailed on the day.
“An excellent race for an excellent cause.” – Ross Bedford
“Awesome, but I’m seriously out of training!” – Bevan Mashonganika
“When you’re knocking at the door of 60 then it hurts trying to chase your son.” – Mike Wood (57) and Kelly Wood (23)
“My mom Des has cancer, so we wore pink braces in her honour. The race was great but a bit short.” – Jody Taylor and Geoff Speirs
The “Win One Soon” soccer team from Hillary ran in honour of one of their players – Darryl Moggee – who’s fighting cancer.

Justin Allison and his Jack Russell Tyson ran the race together and they’ll be back again in 2013.
Although the run is not a road race as such, but a call to action, some runners couldn’t help racing the clock, with the first guys arriving back at the start in around eight minutes, an incredibly fast time for the 4km route.

Once again the Vitamin Water team was on hand with energy drinks and runners were treated to a fresh fruit bowl followed by an egg mayonnaise croissant courtesy of Kerry Shewan of Funcat Functions and Catering.
eThekwini’s ER24 paramedics were on hand to monitor the event and guide the runners along the route to wolf whistles from lady motorists on their way to work.
Despite a standing offer of a free ride home in the SAPS wagon for anyone willing to shed their kit, no one took up the challenge, opting instead to “make it happen” in empoweRED Etana-Speedo style all the way home.

Northwood hosted DHS on a sunny but windy day. Northwood bowled DHS out for 141 in the 46th over. DHS did not have a batsmen that could anchor their innings as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Although guilty of bowling 15 wides and giving away 28 extras in total, the Northwood bowlers were still in a wicket taking mood as S. Moodley lead from the front as he picked up 4 for 27 at 3.37 per over. Moodley was backed well by D. Van der Merwe and K. Rowling as they chipped in with two wickets a piece.
Northwood did not get off to the best start as they lost a few early wickets. DHS were looking to fight their way back into the game but K.Rowling and D.Van der Merwe once again stepped up and managed to steer the ship. The pair held the innings together with K. Rowling making 30 runs before being dismissed and D.Van der Merwe was on 40 when he was stumped off the bowling of A. Ndlovu. The Northwood batsmen were eating away at the runs despite losing a few more wickets, seeing DHS off in the 43rd over for a three wicket victory.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by just how much despair there is around you every day? Well, East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game is an opportunity for you to do your small part in the bigger picture of spreading cheer to those who desperately need it. It is a chance to reach out to children in government hospitals, crèches, orphanages and child-headed households around the province by donating new toys or cash, which goes towards food parcels.
There is a collection box in Northwood’s reception and we, as Northwood School, look forward to being a major contributor. We trust that the Northwood family will support this worthy cause.

He’s a Scotsman, a keen chess player, an educator and for almost two decades, Paul McAvoy has dedicated his life to teaching.
McAvoy was recently appointed deputy principal of Northwood School, a position he has held at Rand Park High for a number of years. His new appointment is one he is relishing.
“Northwood is a school of strong traditions and it is blessed with immense resources, both in terms of facilities and human capital. It is my goal to ensure that the school reaches its maximum potential in as many areas as possible,” he said.
After a brief dalliance with law, McAvoy studied teaching in Pretoria and Johannesburg and holds an honours degree in education, specialising in educational management.
Paul, an avid sportsman, husband to Vivien, father of Logan, said at school, he tried to compete in as many sports as he could but chess was his forté. Paul holds SA school colours for chess and has also been a national selector for South Africa.
When asked whether he was looking forward to his new post at Northwood, he replied ‘without a doubt’.
“There is a fantastic feeling of community within Durban North and surrounds, something I became aware of during holidays and other trips to the area, this, together with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a school which has already achieved so much, makes Northwood a place that any educator would want to be,” he said.
Paul McAvoy has commenced in October as deputy principal of Northwood School.
