Northwood 1st Hockey Win Hard Fought Match vs Kearsney

On a wet and rainy Saturday the 7th of May the Northwood 1st hockey team went up to Kearsney for their annual fixture.

The game started off at high intensity with Northwood under a lot of pressure.

After the first ten minutes Northwood picked up the intensity and scored a well worked short corner. Josh Cowell’s drag flicked was well saved by the Kearsney keeper, however Cody Van Bremen got on the end of it to tap in for the first goal.

Before the end of the first half Kearsney were awarded a short corner and converted it from a slip flick into the bottom corner.

The start of the second half was played very well from Northwood with some great play – pressure from the Northwood boys, and a goal being disallowed by the umpires which was the right decision.

In the last 5 minutes of the game Northwood were awarded a short corner which was excellently taken by Josh Cowell. A low and powerful dragflick which beat the keeper to score, took them to the lead,  winning the game 2-1.

Northwood 1st Team Hockey vs Jeppe – An Epic Tussle

On Friday the 22nd Jeppe High School arrived after a long bus trip from JHB. There were hockey games played on Friday and the rest of the A teams played on Saturday.

The 1st team hockey game kicked off at 10:15 on Saturday. A lovely crowd had arrived to watch what become an exciting and fast paced game of top high school hockey.

Bradley McNally scored an awesome and well worked goal. Starting at right half with some good touches from Liam McIlroy down the right hand side, Bradley ended off tapping the ball in with a well worked team goal.

Jeppe were then piling on the pressure in the first half having 8 penalty corners against Northwood and 7 being saved and kept out.

Jeppe equalized before the end of the half going into half time 1-1.

The second half started as the first half had ended, with fast paced hockey.

Josh Cowell had an incredible run down the left hand side of the field, ending off finishing from the smallest angle sneaking in past the Jeppe goalkeeper.

Jeppe equalized again from a penalty stroke ending the game 2-2.

Northwood 1st Team Hockey Outscore Glenwood High School

Northwood 1st team played Glenwood 1st team in an incredibly well played and respectful game.

Northwood started off with great tempo applying lots of pressure, and despite Glenwood’s strong defense, Northwood managed to start a well worked goal from a cross from Liam McIlroy for Captain Cody Van Breemen to get on the end of it.

For the last 15 minutes Glenwood applied lots of pressure, and their efforts paid of with a fantastic ball into the circle deflecting into the goal.

Keeper Ryan Whitehurst, having a stormer of a game, kept Glenwood from scoring.

The second half was a very well worked performance from Northwood scoring 4 goals to win 5-1.

A great goal (deflection from out of no-where!) from J Cowel got the team fired up.

Another 3 goals from a wonderful team effort from all the boys finished the game off.

Northwood 5 – Glenwood 1

Northwood 1st Team Hockey Victorious vs DHS

On Saturday the 9th of April Northwood played DHS in a very exciting and high scoring game. Northwood started an attacking game early into the first few minutes, with centre forward, Josh Cowell, getting on the end of Liam McIlroy’s shot at goal.  The boys kept their composure and intensity at a high tempo ending the first half with the score 3-0 despite DHS defense holding strong and some good saves by their goal keeper.

The second half started off slowly with DHS defending well. Towards the end of the game Northwood won a short corner and Josh Cowell converted once again ending off the game with 4 goals. The tempo picked up greatly in the last 5 minutes with the boys scoring another 5 goals in the half.

A great game was played on the day with Northwood winning 8-0.

Northwood – Easter Rugby Festivals

U15A Rugby at Northwood Rugby Festival – March 18th – 21st

This will be the inaugural Northwood U15 Rugby festival. Northwood have schools such as Penryn, Sutherland, Krugersdorp, Kloof, DHS and KZN Development, as well as their very own B side competing at this festival. With the U14 age group doing well last year we expect some good results from the home side – however, it is imperative to mention that this is a festival and not a tournament that produces a winner. The focus is strictly on good, fun and competitive rugby – all creating an enjoyable atmosphere over 3 days for all spectators, parents, boys and coaches to enjoy. The boys will play their first game on Saturday vs. Sutherland and from then on play strength vs. strength on days 2 and 3. We wish them best of luck, remain safe and play in a good spirit.

U14A Rugby to Parktown – March 17th– 20th

The U14A rugby side travelled to Krugersdorp last year and were the winners of the tournament, subsequently it was great to be invited to the Parktown’s long standing U14 rugby festival. Parktown have some strong and competitive schools participating. The boys will play 5 shortened formatted games over 2 days. They start with a tough one vs. Pretoria Boys High and then onto St Davids that evening. Saturday’s matches will depend on results from Friday’s fixtures. The boys have had a good pre-season so we are excited to see how they go up against some of the top rugby schools around. Good luck to the boys and no matter what, keep your heads up and your school proud!

1st Team Rugby to KES – March 23rd – 28th

Northwood’s 1st XV will be travelling to their third consecutive KES Easter rugby festival this year. During their first year they unfortunately struggled against some tough competition and could not attain a victory. Last year they made up for it by winning two of their three matches. The KES Easter Rugby Festival still maintain the largest crowd attendance for any Easter Rugby festival country wide. The boys always bond extremely well on tour and learn a large amount within such a short period about themselves as a team, and always arrive back in Durban excited to take on the local schools again. The boys will definitely have a character building tour this year having to go up against Queens College, Eldoraigne and hosts KES for their three matches. We wish them the best of luck whilst they put their bodies on the line for their school!

MIC of Rugby

Northwood 1st XV Start Season with Victory vs George Campbell

Saturday saw the first run out for Northwoods 1st XV as we hosted George Campbell.

The game started off slowly for Northwood, as one would expect for the first game of the season. George Campbell, however, looked very threatening from the get go. Northwood got first points on the board through a penalty by Robin Weersma – who looked very promising with his goal kicking and will no doubt be a great weapon to have in our arsenal this year.

George Campbell was very tenacious throughout the first half however Northwood managed to secure a comfortable 24-6 lead at this stage.

Coming into the second half George Campbell turned it on and worked a penalty for themselves, which was converted. However, Northwood continued to dominate up front, with scrums and lineout’s going very well due to both props (Gugu Nelani and Ngoni Moyo) being in their second year and hooker and captain, Nthuthuko Mthembu, currently in his third year.

Kyle Jooste and Philup Jansen of Northwood are both pleasant to lift and this was obvious on Saturday.

George Campbell managed to get a try of their own, with Northwood replying with two more tries.

Final score 36-16 to Northwood Knights.

Northwood’s Director of Cricket Brings International Team to Victory

Recently Mr Andrew Shedlock, our Director of Cricket had the opportunity to go to Dubai and coach the Gemini Arabians that were competing in the Masters Championship League. The tournament ran over 3 weeks and players making up the team were iconic cricketers from around the world. Some big names making up the Gemini Arabians include Virender Sehwag, Brad Hodge, Justin Kemp, Shivnarin Chandrapaul, Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakara.

The Gemini Arabians went through the entire tournament without loss, beating the Leo Lions in the final by 16 runs. Congratulations Mr Shedlock on your team’s victory. The lessons learnt by spending time amongst those great players will be of tremendous value to our Northwood Cricketers.
