The Northwood 1st hockey team claimed a 1 – 0 victory against a tough, determined St Albans team on Sunday.
Northwood dominated the first half creating the majority of the scoring chances. Some brilliant goal keeping from the St Albans keeper saw the teams deadlocked at the half time break.
The second half continued in the same way but Northwood eventually scored their seventh penalty corner through Dale van der Merwe after a well worked variation.
Northwood had an opportunity to take a 2 – 0 lead with a minute to play through a penalty stroke but the St Albans goal keeper saved brilliantly to keep the final score at 1 – 0.
The Northwood 1st hockey team played to a tough 2 – 2 draw against Pretoria Boys on Friday 17 May.
After 9 hours of travelling the Northwood boys were slow starters and conceded early through a penalty corner rebound against a fired up Pretoria Boys team. The team fought back strongly and managed to score from a powerful drag flick from Dale van der Merwe.
Northwood started to take control of the match and forced a number of scoring chances and penalty corners but were unable to convert. Pretoria Boys took a 2 – 1 lead into the half time break after a brilliant individual effort.
The second half saw Northwood completely dominate the play and they were rewarded with about 10 minutes to play when Dale van der Merwe scored his second drag flick of the game. Northwood continued to pile on the pressure but were unable to grab the winner.
The team showed good character to get a result after a long day of travelling.
Northwood qualified for the night league final last Wednesday when they had a convincing 4 – 1 win against Westville.
Tylo Remke was the hero of the day when he scored a hat-trick with the other goal coming from an unlucky Westville defender.
The result means that Northwood will have a chance to defend their title when they meet Kearsney in the final on the 12 June.

On Friday 10th of May, Northwood A Team surfed round three of the KZN School Surfing League at Dairy Beach as solid groundswell began to fill the Durban bay with perfect lines ahead of the weekend. The boys enjoyed being able to compete in some more powerful surf and Northwood took advantage of the good conditions from the very beginning with Bevan Willis posting the top scores in the heat with his first two waves. There were head-high rights coming off the dairy bank and a reforming end-section at the southern end of the beach that Umthombo worked wave after wave to try and take the lead, but the disciplined Northwood team knew what they had to do and followed through.
HEAT RESULTS
1. Northwood A 25
2. Umthombo 21.3
3. Ashton College 18.8
4. Westville B 8.2
Top Surfer – Bevan Willis of Northwood
