Project Academia MMXV

Mr McAvoy surprised the students and staff in assembly with a rather different style from his usual smart tie and jacket! The boys who sold ticket booklets last week got to choose an outfit from our costume room for him to wear – good choice boys!! Last Friday also saw a Hot Chocolate, Juice and Biscuit Bar set up in the foyer for the boys who had sold booklets – the chilly weather was perfect for this!  All money raised will go towards classroom upgrades in 2015, and you may be the lucky winner of some fantastic cash prizes!  Please support this initiative and keep buying tickets!

Northwood old boy and internationally known family therapist, Rod Smith, addressed our students in a moving assembly today.  Rod, who now resides in America, is well known for his “You and Me” newspaper column which is read in over 130 countries and which is published every week in The Mercury.  He fondly remembers his grade 9 year at Northwood (previously Beachwood and Northlands) when he discovered his passion and talent for writing which set him on his lifelong career path.  Rod was previously awarded the Circle of Valour Award in 2013 in acknowledgement of his service to the community, and continues to be an example to our Squires and Knights of Northwood.

Northwood Take the KZN Schools Surfing Final at the Durban July Surfing Extravaganza

Bay of Plenty, Durban

Friday to Sunday July 11 & 13 , 2014

Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (Monday July 14, 2014) – This year’s KZN Schools Surfing League Finals was wrapped up with two days of competition in very contestable 3 foot, glassy conditions at the Bay of Plenty involving over 100 surfers, Northwood was crowned the Champions and top Surfing school in KZN on the final day of the 2014 Durban July Surfing Extravaganza.

The standard of surfing was the best seen yet! Northwood managed to surf their way to the top in every heat, enjoying the good conditions, showing their class every step of the way. The final heat was no different, where the team of Wazir Surajlall, Keagan Wallace, Bevan Willis, Nathan Wallace and Jaime Irvine showed the crowd why Northwood should be crowned the KZN Champs.

KZN SCHOOLS TAG TEAM FINAL

1. Northwood

2. Clifton

3. Westville

4. Crawford North Coast

5. Glenwood

Durban July Surfing Extravaganza

A very well done to Bevan Willis, who took part in the Individuals contest at the Durban July Surfing Extravaganza; Sanctioned by Surfing South Africa as a 2A Rated Pro Surf Tour event.

Bevan dominated the under 16 and under 18 divisions by taking first place in both age groups. Surf conditions were really tricky, but Bevan showed his talent regardless of the conditions with a display of power surfing, scoring a 9 for one of his rides in the final heat.

Well Done!

Northwood Heads of Subjects Embark on Exciting Afritwin International Programme

The Afritwin programme involves a three way link between the schools of the global north with two schools of the south, Northwood and a historically disadvantaged school in Kwa Mashu. From the inception of the programme in 2006, our bond with our UK school, Bournside in Cheltenham has strengthened culminating in three reciprocal learner exchange tours, which were both culturally and academically enlightening to all parties. Over the years the schools have engaged in exciting curricular projects in Life Sciences, English, Maths and Afrikaans which broadened the horizons of learners on both sides of the equator. The co-ordinator of the programme at Northwood, Shomane Pillay, has presented strategies to maintaining an effective partnership at an international Conference in Cape Town. This year once again sees two of our Academic Heads of subject, Vincent Vadivellu and Ronnie Harishun jetting off to our link school in the UK to share expertise and broaden their knowledge and skills in global trends in education. This exchange by its very nature, is bound to benefit Northwood Boys in their academic endeavors.

Exciting Developments for Northwood School’s Aquatics Centre

Karen Thevenau, a well know swimming coach in the Durban North community has recently joined Northwood School’s Aquatics centre. Karen will take on the role of 1st team swimming coach, as well as running high performance sessions with students.  “I look forward to putting the emphasis on technique and fitness to bring out the full swimming potential in the boys”.    She joins forces with Haydn Skinner, who relocated from Grey PE to take up the position of Waterpolo  1st team coach at the beginning of this year.  Together the two newly appointed specialist coaches are streamlining the aquatics programme, bringing a synergy  that will seriously challenge their traditional rivals in the pool.
