Northwood Remembers Their Fallen Heros

A poignant assembly was held this morning, 11 November, to commemorate Remembrance Day. This year also marked the 100th anniversary of the 1st World War.  Many of our past pupils have lost their lives in service to our country, and today were remembered for their sacrifice as their names were read out, the flag lowered and a minute of silence held in their honour.

Speech Day 2014 at Northwood

Congratulations to our new Headboy, Ntobeko Sibisi (Glenashley Prep Old Boy) and his four Deputies, Keagan Sparks, Justin Snyman, Tyler Smith and Eugene Van Wyk on their nomination as leaders and role models at Northwood.

As always, our Northwood students excelled academically, and the awards were an impressive list of those achievers.  Our Dux for 2014 is Kashir Gopal (who’s brother was also Dux in 2010) – he was also the recipient of no fewer than 6 other academic awards.

Darryn Gallagher was our guest speaker at Speech Day,  not only is Darryn our MIC of Hockey and Northwood 1st Team Coach – he is also an Olympic Hockey Player, SA Under 21 Coach and Head of Hockey at Varsity College.

We now wish our current grade 12’s all the best as they embark on study leave for their upcoming final exams.  We thank 2014 Headboy, Greg Slater and his team of Deputies and Prefects for epitomizing what at Knight should be in their leadership of the school this year.

Northwood’s Chidoma Tackles his Goals

Newspaper article courtesy of Northglen News, written by Shiraz Habbib.

AT the beginning of the year, Northwood School’s loose head prop, Ngoni Chidoma, wrote down four things he wanted to achieve in 2014. They were to make the Craven Week side, the SA Schools side, cement his place as a regular starter in the schools first side and sign a Sharks contract. The 17-year-old man mountain did all this more proving that he is well able to adapt to the rigours of international schoolboy rugby.

Chidoma was one of only three KZN lads to be selected for the SA Schools team who took on the might of Europe as they faced off against the U18 teams of England, France, and Wales in an international series. What’s more is he also became the first player in the school’s history to make the SA Schools side.

“Making the team was a dream come true. Receiving my green and gold blazer and bok tie was a huge honour. It is a stepping stone in my career and I hope to build on my performances and my next goal is to be selected for the U20 bok trial squad,” Chidoma.

The Zimbabwe born prop played two games for the schools squad against France and England.

“I made my first appearance against France and the differences between school rugby was immediately apparent. You can’t switch off, every inch, ruck and maul are fiercely contested. It definitely opened my eyes as to what international rugby is all about,” he said.

Chidoma also praised the new coaching staff at Northwood made up of head coach, and former Sharks player Grant Bashford, scrum coach and former Sharks loose-head prop, Eduard Coetzee, and SA Schools player in 1997, Simon Vickers, the conditioning coach.

“They’ve all been great this year and have helped mould me and guide me on and off the field and I’m grateful for their input. You don’t succeed in sport without the support of coaches, friends and family and that is what has helped me reach my goals,” he said.

Mr Govender Gets Iced for Northwood’s Academia MMXV

Ticket sales for our Project Academia MMXV Fundraiser went sky high last week with the promise of Mr Govender taking the ice bucket challenge should the students reach a  certain target.  And reach that target they did! Mr Govender, being the good sport he is, took the challenge gladly and in front of the entire school at last weeks assembly.  The students who had sold the most booklets got to do the honors!

Mr McAvoy also had a cold and wet morning as he accepted his nomination from the headmaster of Jeppe Boys to take up the Ice Bucket Challenge, which he did in his trademark smart suit and tie! Along with accepting his nomination, Mr McAvoy also made a donation to ICare.
