Yesterday a group of boys and educators had the privilege of visiting Kasturba Gandi Primary School in Gandi Settlement, a mere 15 minutes drive from school. Our hearts were so drawn to the little children that eagerly met us at the gate. We were all greatly affected by the poverty that neighbours us and shocked at the conditions that these little ones and their educators go about their daily school routine in – yet they do it with big smiles on their faces.
The children were so grateful for the Easter eggs given to them – some of whom have never seen sweets before! We were humbled by the experience and have promised to visit again. Thank you to everyone who supported the Northwood Cares Easter egg drive, you made a lot of children very happy! |

The Northwood 1st hockey team produced a dominant 5 – 2 victory against Michaelhouse over the weekend.
After conceding an early goal against the run of play Northwood stepped up their play to produce a brilliant half of hockey which saw them score 4 goals in 20 minutes to take a commanding 4 – 1 lead into the half time break. Northwood’s first goal was scored by Steve McManus after a well worked penalty corner variation. This was then followed up by an own goal from an unlucky Michaelhouse defender. Jamie Pillay then scored his first goal for the Northwood first team and this was followed up by a penalty stroke from Dale van der Merwe.
Michaelhouse started the second half the stronger of the two teams and created a number of chances before finally scoring their second. This ignited the Northwood team into action and they answered through a goal from the outstanding Matthew de Sousa to secure a fantastic 5 – 2 win.

The Northwood 1st hockey team started their season with a solid victory against Kearsney. The team were in fantastic form in the first half and took a dominant 3 – 0 lead after goals from Dale van der Merwe, Matthew de Sousa and Steve McManus. Kearsney managed to pull one back before the half time break.
The second half never reached the standard of the first half with both teams missing some good chances. Both the Northwood and Kearsney goal keepers were in outstanding form on the day. Kearsney managed to score a second goal on the final whistle but the Northwood victory was already sealed by this stage. Congratulations to our boys for an outstanding start to the season!

Northwood played DHS at the inaugural Toyota Schools Festival at Kings Park Stadium last night. The game turned out to be a very close encounter with both sides playing attractive running rugby. In the first ten minute DHS’ right wing ran in under the post only to drop the ball, much to the dismay of their supporters. This spurred Northwood on as they worked their way into the DHS half and were awarded a penalty with Sassa Makhanya converting the kick to go 3-0 up, a score which they held on to until half time.
Northwood started the second half by putting DHS under pressure which paid off. After numerous drives and some good work, Thabo Thabethe scored and Northwood went up 8-0. DHS then kicked a penalty over and put Northwood under pressure, especially in the last 5 minutes. Our defence held and we were victorious with a score of 8 – 3.
Congratulations to Gareth Murran who was named Man of the Match.
