Participation and Achievement
Northwood believes participation and achievement in sport plays a vital role in the education and development of the individual, encouraging team spirit, sportsmanship, leadership and physical development. A learner who seizes the opportunities in this sphere of school life will feel the benefit in all other areas, while establishing a lifelong pattern of healthy competition and physical fitness.
Sport Management and Sports on Offer
The Sports Director and his team of MIC’s (Master-in-Charge) and coaches are responsible for the efficient execution of a large and varied sporting programme. Northwood offers participation in cricket, rugby, hockey, soccer, swimming, water polo, basketball, golf, surfing, body-boarding, tennis, squash, cross country, athletics, badminton, softball, volleyball, and cycling.
Sporting Legends
Our current sportsmen follow in the footsteps of Northwood’s numerous sporting legends, which include former Proteas captain Shaun Pollock, Africa Cup-winning Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey, rugby Springboks Hugh Reece-Edwards, Craig Davidson and Warren Brosnihan and hockey Olympians Gregg Clark, Ken Forbes and brothers Wade and Taine Paton.
Hockey Outdoor and Indoor Champs
Northwood was the first school in KwaZulu-Natal to install an Olympic-standard water-based Poligras artificial turf hockey pitch. The benefit was felt in the first year when a record nineteen Northwood players represented KZN hockey sides, following in the proud tradition of the school’s many international hockey players. Northwood’s hockey has gone from strength to strength, with 2012 seeing Northwood become the first school to win both the Outdoor Night Series and Indoor League in the same year. Among other outstanding player accolades our grade 11’s in the same year boasted four KZN Coastals U18A players and one SA U18B player.
Rugby Programme
An intensive rugby initiative has seen the introduction of a dedicated Head of Rugby, an extended training season, high performance squads and scientific coaching and conditioning methods. The opportunity of playing rugby for Northwood is open to talented young players from throughout KZN.
Aquatic Community and School Gymnasium
The swimming pool is heated to enable aquatics training to continue all year round and allow cross-training with the school’s winter sports. The pool is the centre of a thriving water polo community at Northwood. The school gymnasium alongside the swimming pool is used by individuals and teams for strength and fitness training under a qualified instructor. To add to this aquatic community Northwood’s surfing team remains exceedingly competitive year after year.

Indoor Cricket Academy
The school’s four-lane indoor cricket facility, equipped with two bowling machines, is managed by a full-time dedicated cricket coach. All Northwood cricket teams and future registered pupils who are in grade seven have weekly access to the popular facility, which is situated on the Lower Campus.
Sports Medicine Centre
The Sports Medicine Centre situated on lower campus provides a diverse range of medical services to our sportsmen. The qualified physiotherapist, biokineticist and chiropractor are available to assist first team coaches at practices and games with player preparation, injury assessment, emergency treatment and rehabilitation. The team is also available at preferential rates for all Northwood sportsmen, staff, parents, Old Boys and the greater school community.
High Performance Training
In addition to these specialised sporting centres, Northwood boasts extensive rugby, soccer and cricket fields and tennis, basketball and volleyball courts on the spacious campus. High Performance Coaching is available for cricket, hockey, rugby, soccer and water polo during Life Orientation lessons.
