On 2 March 2006 the Northwood Artificial Astro turf Hockey Pitch was opened. The stated vision for the world class hockey facility was to “serve the Durban North community, strengthen its contribution to Kwa Zulu Natal hockey at development level and contribute towards improving the game of hockey in greater Durban area from a community base”.
Northwood hockey immediately formed partnerships with its neighboring sister schools of Northlands and Danville and its local feeder Primary Schools. In addition relationships were developed with junior and senior clubs in the area. “Northwood’s hockey vision is one that extends beyond itself” founded on providing the school hockey community in Durban North with, world class playing facilities, the best hockey coaches in an environment of disciplined learning Northwood. It is in its eighth year of realizing the dream under Director of Hockey former South African Player Daryn Gallagher.
As a consequence of the above Northwood’s first team hockey has achieved a very high level of results during its 2013 season. Playing 25 matches against opposition from all major centres in South Africa and one match against Millfield, a leading school from England. Northwood won 21 lost 2 and drew 2 matches scoring 105 goals at an average of 4.2 per match. Northwood completed the season as the top first team hockey side in Kwa Zulu Natal and was recognised in the top 3 teams in South Africa. At the recently completed National Inter- Provincial tournaments Northwood contributed 21 selected players in all age groups with eight of its first team players selected to participate in the National U18 tournament in Cape Town for Kwa Zulu Natal teams.
